Johnson: I Will Not Debate

By Drew Sandholm

Sen. Tim Johnson says he will not take part in debates during his re-election campaign.

As the incumbent Democrat seeks to keep his senior Senate seat, Johnson says his speech has not improved to a point that adequately reflects his abilities. Read Johnson's entire press release here.

His announcement comes more than a week after Johnson began airing his first political ads. In his first campaign commercial, Johnson says, "I'm getting better, but my speech needs work."

Johnson's campaign says his record speaks for itself.

"If you look at what Tim's done for the state, look at what he brought back this year, look at all the accomplishments, that's the strongest voice he could deliver," said campaign manager Steve Jarding.

In a phone interview with KSFY, Republican Senate candidate Joel Dykstra says Johnson's decision not to debate could have political repercussions. He said, "I think that we really have to be asking ourselves what there is about participating in a debating society, like the U.S. Senate, in an area, in a role where that is such an important part of what Senators do."

Meanwhile, political analyst and South Dakota State University professor emeritus says that while oratory skills seem important, they aren't essential. He said, "If you look at the membership of the U.S. Senate today, there's probably, you know, three or four U.S. Senators that really have a reputation as being great speakers, of great orators."

Burns says Senators need to write well and have the ability to rally others behind legislation.

The campaigning continues this weekend for Dykstra, who says he'll make stops throughout the state. Johnson is in Michigan visiting family.

If you can't debate here how do you debate on the floor? Are the staffers doing this job?? Nice guy and regardless of speech its time for change. We need someone to cause some waves and get some fresh ideas. Tim isn't that person he just doesn't cause waves he goes with the flow of things to much for me. But hey he is a nice guy and feel bad about health but I really feel its time for a change just as it was when SD finally got rid of Dashle. Our future is very important. Think before voting!

It is kind of funny how Dykstra has only been in the United States for 2 of the last 3 decades

What is Tim the Dem scared of? We all know what frightens Tim: that people will see his disability and know he isn't up to the job. Give it up Tim. You had a nice run but it's time to go to the home.

Do you know how they "debate" on the floor of the senate? There's a HUGE difference in reciting prepared speeches and forming a rebuttal than engaging in a formal debate. My father said after his Aneurysm he could think the words but had trouble getting the words to his mouth. At this point obviously Johnson is able to recite prepared speeches, but its still difficult to say what he thinks. His decision to avoid debates obviously isn't going to help him, but its what he feels he must do.

I hate the fact that you said we "FINALLY" got rid of Daschle. SD had a smart, well-spoken, Democrat in the highest wings of Government, and what did we do? Run a smear campaign and put in Thune. Who has. . . . . well what has he done? He sure did smile a lot....

Getting rid of Daschle is the stupidest thing SD has done in my memory, there is a reason we don't have money anymore, no more senate majority leader, getting rid of Johnson would put us in a terrible spot as far as our voice in Washington is concerned

In regards to Dykstra only being here 2 of the last 3 decades? What about Herseth she came back just to run?? Do you even know anything about Dykstra? Where he stands on any issues? Pay attention to the debates he will still partake in without an opponent. You may be surprised. Get all the facts and then decide on issues not party!!

Sen Johnson's record since returning have been great. He probably has done more and consistantly been there better than anyone who's been a presidential candidate this year. He'll continue to represent the state effectively. If you don't like his politics, don't vote for him. But don't base your decision on the smear that he's inneffective because he's not debating.

Glad that we have Tim Johnson in our government. Also -understand that he will not debate--not that his mind is not 100%--but his speach is not, which he admidts. I Trust this man
