Scott Munsterman, one of four Republicans running for governor, says public education in South Dakota needs a major overhaul.
"We need to create efficiencies within our education system, meaning that adminstrative efficiencies can be created so that we can free up more money that can go into ciriculum," said Munsterman.
The former Brookings mayor says if elected governor, he would improve efficiencies by connecting K-12 schools with public colleges and universities, enabling more kids to obtain college credit while still in high school.
At the same time, Munsterman says those students need to be able to have practical experiences in the classroom, which will apply to the real world after graduation. He says that includes improving technology resources and expanding innovative thinking.
To pay for such changes, Munsterman says he would better audit how school districts spend their money and starting with administrators. He said, "We need to step back and we need to take a look at do we really need one superintendent per school district? You know, if I was running, if I was operating this system as a business, I would say no."
Republicans Lt. Gov. Dennis Daugaard, Sen. Dave Knudson, and Ken Knuppe are also vying to become South Dakota's 32 Governor. Although Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin and Sen. Scott Heidepriem are considering a run, no Democrats have thrown their hats in just yet.
