KSFY Charity Home Update: Heated Flooring

The KSFY Charity Home is in the process of getting heating flooring. It will ensure the basement floor is warm, even in winter.

By Leslie Rupiper

Imagine having the floors of your home being toasty and warm, even in the dead of winter. That's just one of the features inside the KSFY Charity Home, which is being built at the Grand Prairie Development south of Sioux Falls. Today, we got a look at how heated flooring, works.

Right now, the basement of the KSFY Charity Home looks like some sort of maze. Central Heating & Air has it covered in 4,000 feet of tubing that will ensure the basement stays warm, even when South Dakota winters are at their worst. Kevin Ibach with Central Heating & Air says, "It heats the concrete, which will stay warm for days. Once you get the concrete warm, it'll stay warm for days and weeks at a time." "

Heated water is pumped through the tubes, but each room is controlled separately, so if you want one room to be warmer than another, you just adjust accordingly." Kevin says, "Like the guest bedroom, for instance. They can keep that cool when they don't have guests and they can turn it up when they have people around."

On Monday, crews will pour concrete over the tubing. Then they'll install two boilers and hook up valves to control each zone of the house. Kevin says it's a trend that's catching on, but it's still pretty special. He says, "It is definitely a luxury. It's fairly expensive, but anyone that has it would never give it up." Once the Charity Home is finished, we'll sell tickets for tours. The money will benefit the Children's Home Society.
