Picking the right tree for your yard

By Lisa May

Now that the trees are leafing out, you may have asked yourself, "Should I put another tree in my backyard?" The next question then is, "Which kind of tree should I plant?"

Erik Helland from "Landscape Garden Center" says when picking out a tree - pick the right tree for the right location. Make sure it's not too large for the spot or will overgrow the area or actually getting a tree that's too small. Scale is something we always want to take into consideration.

The three trees we are talking about are:

Container Trees - These are trees that are actually planted and grown in a container. They weigh between 50-100 pounds and are about 12-feet tall. There are a wide selection of trees to choose from.

Potted Tree - These trees weigh close to 200 pounds and it takes at least two strong people to pick these up and plant them.

B&B or Balled & Burlap Tree - Grown at the Landscape Garden Center site. They are spaded out in early Spring or late fall.

When looking for that perfect tree for your yard, pick one with good form. Most trees should have one main leader (or trunk) and a balanced number of side branches. They should look healthy and free from insect damage--and show evidence of growth.
