It's Your Money: Should I Hire An Attorney?

Is it worth spending your money to hire an attorney? It's a big question that most of us will have the answer at one point or another in our. Life can bring about many complex situations for you and your family, but is it worth spending money on an attorney every time you run into a problem?  KSFY's financial expert Aaron Maguire has ideas on how to know if it's really worth spending your money to hire an attorney.

When should I hire an attorney?

  1) Consider what is as stake.
• Think about the dollar amount in question. Is it $1,000 or $5,000 or more. What is the dollar amount have to be for you to hire an attorney. 
• Keep in mind if the dollar amount in question is $1,000 and your attorney charged you 6 hours of time at $200 per hour. It just cost you $1,200 to get $1,000.

• Are you being sued?
• Are you getting a divorce or married?
• Are you buying a home or a business?
• Are you being charged for a crime?
• Do you need a will?
o These are all good reasons to see an attorney

Is there a certain time I should talk to an attorney?

   2) Talk to an attorney as soon as possible!
• It is better to find out what your options are sooner, rather than later
• If you are unsure about the situation you are in…seek advice
• Most attorneys will charge you an hourly rate to see you…find out what the attorney’s hourly rate is first.

Is there a certain kind of attorney I should talk to?

       3) Find an attorney that specializes in what you need.

• Hire an expert in the field that pertains to your need
• Don’t be afraid to spend a little more money to get the best…you might save money up front but have to pay a lot more in the end
• Find an attorney that has experience
• With good advice, you will be better prepared for the situation you need
• Make sure the attorney is willing to provide you good service, return your phone call, follow up with you, etc.
