Common Sense Tips For Seniors

By KSFY Staff

If you are over the age of 55, you need to be aware that there are people out there that will be more than happy to try to take advantage of you. Financial Expert Aaron Maguire has some common sense tips to protect yourself.

Question: What is the first thing that someone over 55 should do?

· Don’t talk to strangers

· If someone calls you on the phone with something to sell, have them send you information in writing first, before you commit to buying anything

· If someone calls you on the phone and asks you to wire money or pay cash…hang up

· If someone asks for your Social Security number over the phone…don’t give it to them

· If a company offers to get you a loan or repair your bad credit for a "fee"…don’t believe them Question: What should seniors think about with their investments?

· Never buy an investment over the phone

· Be very careful of fixed and variable annuities…they usually have long surrender charges and can "lock up" your money for a period of up to 10 years

· Stay away from "Margin" accounts…this simply allows you to borrow money to buy more stock…this is very risk

· Make sure the investments are suitable for you…know how much risk is involved

Question: Is there anything seniors should be careful of when they are at their home?

· If someone knocks on your door…don’t just open it up…make sure you have a peephole to see who is there

· Lock your doors and windows

· Vary your daily routine

· Be wary or unsolicited offers to make repairs on your home
