It seems like there is no end to rising gas prices and with summer approaching they are going to get higher. Our Financial Expert Aaron Maguire has some good tips on saving money at the pump and getting the best gas mileage possible for your car.

How do we save money at the pump?
 
• Find out where the lowest gas prices are… Go to www.gasbuddy.com   Enter your zip code and the gas prices will show up at most of the local stations
• Use a credit card that will give you a rebate back on gas purchases
• Buy your gas in the evening or morning when it is colder…gas is more dense when it is cold and expands when it is hot
• If you are thinking about buying an car or an SUV…pay attention to the gas mileage…look for a hybrid or a car that can use an ethanol mix

What can we do to get better gas mileage?

• Use synthetic oil…the lubricants reduce the friction in your engine and synthetic oil lasts three to five times longer than petroleum-based oils
• Pay attention to your tires…if your tires are 20% under inflated…your fuel mileage can drop by 10% to 15%...that is the equivalent of two to three miles per gallon
• Clean out your car…you gain 1% to 2% improvement in fuel economy for every 100 pounds your vehicle sheds.
• Change your air filter on a regular basis…having a clean air filter can improve the efficiency of your car by 10%

• Hyvee and Sunshine offer daily discounts on gas when you buy your groceries from them
• Consider buying a car that gets better gas mileage
• Take a look at the Sams Club gas station…they consistently have less expensive gas
• When it is cold, avoid idling your car…idling wastes about a quart of gas every 15 minutes
• Take the time to remove your snow tires in the spring time…deep tread and big tires use more fuel
