If you're married most often one of you controls the money and that person might take care of all the investments too but there are some things to know if you're not that person.
Financial expert Aaron Maguire has some tips for couples.
Aaron, is it ok if just one spouse handles the investments?
It is ok for one spouse to handle the investments, however:
Make sure that the other spouse understands where all the investments are
Make sure a contact sheet is made up for your attorney, financial consultant, insurance agent. etc.
Write down how much money you have, where it is, how it is invested.
Write down how much insurance you have at work, outside work, and what company it is with.
Put all of that information in a safe place and make sure your attorney or a family member knows where it is
If you have an elderly parent, you will want to consider all of the above
How do you know if you are heading in the right direction?
Talk to a professional.
Have a financial consultant perform a financial plan for you.
This should be someone that can offer you all types of investments and services, not someone that can only offer you one type of investment.
This will enable you to have all of your financial related information analyzed and collected in one place.
Have your investments reviewed on a quarterly basis. It is a crazy market out there.
Have your insurance reviewed on a yearly basis life, health, car, auto etc.
What if you are not married but you have children?
Make sure your estate plan is in order and address each specific child
If they are younger than 18 make sure you have a guardian established for your children.
Make sure you have enough life insurance to cover any debt or estate taxes that will have to be paid.
If your children are older than 18, make sure they know where all of your important documents are.
Make sure they know who your attorney is introduce them.
