School Patrol: Buckle Up Bulldogs

Program named after Madison High School mascot.

By Leslie Rupiper

The Madison School District has come up with a unique way to get kids to wear their seat belts. They've created a program called "Buckle Up Bulldogs", named after the school's mascot. The program has caught on in a big way. Every month students at Madison High School try to plan an event that encourages kids to wear their seat belts. Their efforts are popping up all around the community.

The students hold meetings and try to spread their message through radio, newspapers, even the clothes they wear. Members of the community have also jumped on board. Buckle Up Bulldogs gets support from the fire department, law enforcement, even local businesses. Recently, signs went up in several businesses around town, urging every person to buckle up every time they get in the car.

Buckle Up Bulldogs also sponsored a "shoulder tap" event when they reminded people at the local grocery stores to buckle up. They held seat belt safety checks at Madison High School. Most recently they held a mock crash showing people what can happen when you don't buckle up. School leaders say they got through the Homecoming season safely and hope the message of "buckling up" is really sinking in.

Buckle Up Bulldogs will meet again this Thursday to plan out their event for next month. In November, adults involved with the group will also meet to hammer out new ways to spread the message about seat belts. The Buckle Up Bulldogs program also includes students from St. Thomas school in Madison, as well as younger kids from the Madison School District.  The program also gets help from Highway Safety Program through Volunteers of America Dakotas.
