Catholic Schools Week

By Leslie Rupiper

It is Catholic Schools Week and the Sioux Falls Diocese is celebrating in a big way. Nearly 5,100 students attend the three Catholic high schools and 22 grade schools in eastern South Dakota. Through the years, schools in the Sioux Falls Diocese have celebrated Catholic Schools Week in all kinds of ways. There was a variety show at St. Lambert's, a chance to eat lunch with grandparents at O'Gorman Junior High, and students made blankets for the needy at St. Mary/Holy Spirit.

This year's theme is "Catholic Schools Light the Way." At St. Lamberts, students wore bright shirts and brought batteries and light bulbs for the needy. Students are also getting a visit from Blood Bank representatives, urging their parents to give the gift of life on Valentine's Day. At t O'Gorman, students paid $3 for a dress-down day. The money will go to the family of Staff Sergeant Robb Rolfing: an O'Gorman alum who died while serving his country in Iraq. The Rolfings are working to get a statue of an angel holding a soldier put in Sioux Falls' Veterans Memorial Park.

The week will wrap up with an all-city mass at the Elmen Center on Friday. All students and teachers will be wearing matching t-shirts, courtesy of Avera Health. The shirts are aimed at uniting all Catholic schools in eastern South Dakota. You can see the all-city mass live on KSFY. We'll be airing the services starting at 10 a.m. Friday morning.
