More Fruits & Veggies for South Dakota Schools

More South Dakota school kids will get the chance to eat healthy snacks.

By Leslie Rupiper

South Dakota just got word that it will be able to expand its Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program to 25 more schools in the state. That means thousands of children could soon be getting healthier snacks at school. The goal behind the program is to help students make healthy choices when it comes to their snacks. Through the project, kids can sample fresh fruits and vegetables that they might not have tried before. What's even better, students don't have to be limited to lunch time to eat healthy. Schools can offer the fruits and vegetables in classrooms, hallways, buses, or elsewhere, at any time during the day, as well as before and after school.

25 schools will be selected through a competitive application process to take part in the program. Right now 10 schools in the Pine Ridge area are already taking part. But thanks to new legislation, more South Dakota kids will get the chance to take a bite out life, thanks to some healthier snack options.
