Weekly South Dakotan Helps 4th Grade Teachers

By Leslie Rupiper

South Dakota 4th Graders are supposed to learn state history in their classes. In the past, it's been hard for some teachers to find books that were age-appropriate for 4th graders, but still had the correct history of South Dakota. Now, an online resource is making that challenge a lot easier.

The site is called the Weekly South Dakotan. It's the state's first-ever web-based resource center and a place for 4th Grade teachers who's curriculum includes South Dakota history. They can find 9 units that have been divided into four lessons. Each lesson is designed for a 30-minute class. Click on one of the lessons and you'll see an interesting story about South Dakota's early days. If you click on the Teacher's Section, there's even more information about how to make the lessons come to life for 4th Grade school children.

The website is aimed at providing one-stop shopping for teachers who might have otherwise struggled with pulling together all of the resources needed to teach South Dakota history. Organizers say virtually every 4th Grade teacher in South Dakota is using it. The Weekly South Dakotan was put together by the State Historical Society and the South Dakota Department of Education.
