Gayville-Volin Receives $100,000 Grant

By Leslie Rupiper

Gayville-Volin is one of 11 schools and organizations to receive 21st Century Community Learning Center  Grants. The district will get $100,000 over 5 years to expand opportunities for kids. Much of that money will be used for after school programs, but it will also be used to help at-risk kids. Superintendent Jason Selchert says they've received the grant once before and have noticed a positive difference in test scores and have received good feedback on surveys.

Grant awards ranged from $50,000 to $150,000 per year.  The 21st Century Community Learning Centers program is authorized under Title IV, Part B of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.

A total of 28 schools, nonprofits and community organizations applied for grants.  Projects are funded for a period of 5 years based upon annual reviews and successful implementation.  This year's grant recipients join 48 others already serving 80 sites across South Dakota.
