South Dakota teachers got a training course Wednesday in how to use these new laptops in the classroom.

Governor Mike Rounds is standing firm when it comes to put laptop computers in South Dakota schools. Despite some recent controversy he says the pilot program should not only continue, it should be expanded.

Watertown high schoolers were among South Dakota's first to get laptops. The pilot program, called, "Classroom Connections" was started by Governor Rounds. He says, "For these young individuals, when they move into any job market out there, they're gonna have to know how to use a personal computer."

But last legislative session, a proposal requesting $2.9 million to fund the laptop program for its 3rd year died in the Senate. Governor Rounds says he promised he'd find a way to get some schools laptops. He found $700,00 to do so, but some legislators cried foul, and accused the Governor of moving money around. Lawmakers and state leaders met monday to try and clear the air. Sen. Jean Hunhoff of Yankton says, "There were dollars left over which were never communicated or the department was not aware of because all of the expenses had not come in." Hunhoff said the explanation did help get legislators on the same page. Governor Rounds says he's always provided them with the information they've needed, but says he'll work to do better in the future.

As for the laptop program, Rounds is confident he and the legislature will be able to work together to give more South Dakota schools laptops. He says, "South Dakota has not been a follower in technology. We have been a leader and we're gonna continue to be a leader in technology because that's right for our students." The laptops are provided through matching funds. Governor Rounds says 54 schools requested to be part of this year's program. 15 schools will get the laptops.
