South Dakota teachers got a training course Wednesday in how to use these new laptops in the classroom.

By Leslie Rupiper

More than 3-dozen South Dakota schools are getting money to boost programs that help kids improve their technical skills. When you think about technical courses in school, shop class might come to mind. But South Dakota school leaders say it's not that way anymore. Now, things like math and science are getting more emphasis, and the programs that teach kids those subjects are becoming more rigorous. To help, 37 schools and educational cooperatives will get $1.5 million in grants. It'll go toward things like developing a biotechnology course, establishing a hands-on curriculum in science, technology, engineering and math, and developing a pre-apprenticeship program. The hope is, students will be more competitive once they step out of the classroom, and into the workforce.
