We have a progress report on the new elementary school going up in the southwest part of Sioux Falls. The school district has now named a principal, and in the months ahead, we're expected to learn the name of the school, and the boundaries for those who can attend.

The new elementary is already taking shape. It's going up on 53rd Street just east of Ellis Road, not far from the home of Ryan and Shelby Ellwein and their four kids. Shelby says, "They're really excited. It'll be nice to be so close to it." Right now, the Ellwein's 3 school-aged kids go to Discovery Elementary. Her oldest will probably finish there as part of the district's decision to let older children finish at their current schools. But the two younger Ellwein kids will likely go to the new school. Shelby says all of them will be happy about the new school's playground. She says, "We don't have anything real close here. It's basically jfk or discovery if we want to hit a playground, so it's real nice to have something within walking distance."

At this week's meeting, the Sioux Falls School Board announced Julie Hartmann would be the principal at the new school. It's a role she's held at Robert Frost Elementary since 2004. In the meantime, work continues on the school. A committee to name the school will likely come together in the next few month, and kids anxiously await for the doors to open in the fall of next year.
