Three South Dakota schools and one school district have won Governor Mike Rounds' Healthy Schools Award this year. Each will get $5,000 for their efforts. We take a look at what they did to get kudos from the Governor.

The Governor's Healthy Schools award honors schools who take calculated steps to improve the overall health of their students and the school community. Among this year's big winners for award: Mitchell Middle School and High School. Students there took part in taste tests, and thought outside of the box when it comes to what goes on their school lunch trays. Their regular menu now features thinks like kiwi, strawberries, pears and spinach.

The entire Brandon Valley School District also won an award this year. The school held a health fair that drew about 1,600 people. The fair included a volleyball game between school administrators and the high school volleyball team. There was also a dance competition. Food vendors gave parents and students a look at some of the new, healthy items that would be available on their school lunch menu. They're small steps that lead to big changes, and a big award for these schools.

Knollwood Elementary School in Rapid City also won a Healthy Schools Award this year.
