South Dakota Students Selected For National Camp

By Leslie Rupiper

We introduce you to the two South Dakota high school students who will be representing the state at the National Youth Science Camp. It will be held in West Virginia, this summer.

This year's representatives are Joshua Peterson of Brookings and Nicole DeJong of Avon. Both are seniors and both will take part in the 46th year of the National Youth Science Camp held in West Virginia. It's a summer forum where students from every state exchange ideas with leading scientists and professionals from the academic and corporate worlds. The camp is held in a national forest and that appeals to Nicole DeJong. She says, "I'm really excited about all the outdoor activities. We can go kayaking, canoeing and rock climbing in the afternoons and I'm really into outdoor stuff."

Josh Peterson says he's looking forward to meeting lots of people. He says, "It's not only students from around the country, they also have a lot of international students there too, so it'll be a nice chance to meet people from not only other parts of the country, but other parts of the world."

Both students say they plan to incorporate science into their careers after high school. Josh says he'll likely major in Physics, while Nicole says she might be a high school science teacher. The camp is July 1st through the 25th.
