Frederick Area School Goes To 4-Day Week

By Leslie Rupiper

A northeast South Dakota school district has decided to go to a 4-day week. School leaders think the move will save them money.

At least 16 schools in South Dakota have decided to shake things up when it comes to the regular school week, and they've gone to a 4-day week instead. Now, you can add the Frederick Area School District to that list. So far, the plan seems to be going over well in Frederick. Here's how it would impact students and staff. Starting next fall, classes would run from Monday through Thursday, and students would have about 30 minutes added to each day.

The superintendent says the change will make it easier to schedule activities. For example, the district hopes to hold all of its sporting events on Thursday nights, Fridays and Saturdays, so students and teachers who coach won't be out late on school nights. Classes will likely be held on Fridays in November because there are fewer activities during that time of the year.

At a time when so many districts are trying to pinch pennies, the folks at the Frederick School District think the 4 day school week will do just that. They estimate the move will save them about $30,000 a year in busing and lunchroom costs.
