2009 Sioux Falls Teacher Of The Year Announced

By Leslie Rupiper

Four people were nominated for the 2009 Dr. John W. Harris Teacher of the Year award in Sioux Falls. They are:

  • Penny Brunken, Roosevelt High School
  • Carol Daly, Garfield Elementary
  • Sue Greeno, All City Elementary
  • Cher May, Terry Redlin Elementary

The winner is Cher May who's been an ELL teacher in the Sioux Falls School District for 14 years. The ceremony was held at the Holiday Inn City Centre in Sioux Falls. For Cher May, it was overwhelming. Fighting back tears she said, "I'm very humbled and honored to accept this award."

Students, colleagues, friends and family gathered to recognize four outstanding teachers in the district. The Teacher of the Year says the job itself is a dream come true. May says, "It's always been a dream of mine to be a teacher ever since I was a little girl and I never imagined i would receive such an honor."

The Teacher of the Year selection is based on several qualities, including their commitment to teaching. May says it's all about the kids. She says, "To see the light in their eyes when they learn something and to experience new things is so rewarding for teachers and teachers really can make a difference in the lives of their students."

The Teacher of the Year receives a $3,000 prize from Vern Eide Motorcars.
