Local Schools And Organizations Awarded Grants

By Leslie Rupiper

Whittier and Axtell Park Middle Schools, the YMCA and the Multi-cultural Center are among 9 recipients of 21st Century Community Learning Grants.

That money ranges from $50,000 to $150,000 a year and is used to promote in-school after-school programs.

Organizers say the grants are aimed at providing meaningful and safe opportunities outside of regular school time for the young people in this area. Those opportunities include everything from mentoring and homework help to arts and sports.
