Doctors in Aberdeen are seeing a lot of little patients with upper respiratory tract infections. Here's what you can do if you are a parent with a sick child.

Pediatrician Dr. Saeedeh Salmanzadeh at Avera St. Lukes in Aberdeen she says the best thing parents can do when their kids get an upper respiratory tract infection is be patient with their little patient.  The viral bug has to run it's course.

With upper respiratory tract infections or URI's comes a cough, low grade fever, sneezing and a runny nose. And a lot of children have been coming in to Avera St. Lukes with it.

Dr. Salmanzadeh warns parents not to use over-the-counter cough and cold medicine for kids ages 6 and under. Especially with the recent recall.  Instead she says push the fluids. Extra fluids, she says will help with their sinuses along with normal nasal saline drops.

 Dr. Saeedeh Salmanzadeh says, "I show them how to use them. You put it in the nose and use a bulb suction to clean the nose. This way we clean the sinus drainage to prevent overriding bacteria and sinusitis later on.

Dr. Salmanzadeh also encourages parents to run a cool mist vaporizer throughout the fall and winter months beside their children's bed. She also says don't worry about calorie intake in the face of illness.  She recommends pedialyte. She says it's proven to be a good product for her patients.
