We checked in with health-care providers in Tea to find out What's Going Around.

I spoke with Certified Nurse Practitioner Brenda Wills at the Avera Tea Medical Clinic and she says less people are coming in to the doctor's office because of the flu, but people have been coming in because their eyes, ears and throats have been causing them problems.

Wills says, "We are seeing a lot of viral colds, ear infections, strep throat and pink eye. The age groups include elementary school to middle school and a few adults."

Ear infections occur in the space behind the eardrum, in the middle ear. You are more likely to get one after you've had a cold or other upper respiratory infection. Germs get trapped in that built up fluid. It can be treated by over-the-counter pain medicine or your doctor may give your ear drops.

Strep throat is a contagious bacterial infection that causes redness and swelling in the throat and tonsils. It often includes a fever of 101degrees or higher, white draining patches on the throat, and swollen lymph glands in the neck. Antibiotics are often prescribed.

And pink eye or conjunctivitis is redness and inflammation of the membranes covering the white part of your eyes. It's highly contagious and can be either bacterial or viral. If it is viral in nature, it's just like a cold, but in your eye.

Wills says rest is always the best medicine and remember to wash your hands often.
