What's Going Around isn't necessarily an illness but it is season related and work related.

Call it a job hazard, but after talking to Dr. Jerome Bentz at the Platte Health Center Avera, it sounds like a lot of our farmers in rural South Dakota are ending up in the emergency room with broken bones.

For the last few months, it's been calving season in South Dakota which is typically a rough and tough time for farmers and ranchers. Many end up getting broken ribs and broken bones helping the calves enter the world and separating them from their mommas leads to getting chased and pinned and hurt.

Dr. Bentz says, "This is one of their busiest times. Those in the livestock and calving business because it's a 24 hour job and unless they have 2 or 3 people share in the job it's getting up every 2 or 3 hours at night. They are sleep deprived too and the weather has been terrible. It's been snowy and cold and muddy. The livestock is very valuable to them so they do whatever they can to save those calves at the risk of hurting themselves."

Dr. Bentz says they are also seeing a lot more patients who have been hurt on 4-wheelers since farmers and their kids use them instead of riding horses. He says they look harmless but are full of power, dangerous and easy to tip...which makes for a number of trips to the emergency room.
