Seasonal Affective Disorder in O'Neill, NE

By Nancy Naeve

With summer comes bug bites and bee stings and unfortunately both are starting to go around. We talked to a pediatrician at McGreevy Clinic in Sioux Falls to find out what you can do when you or your baby gets bit.

With the good always comes a little bad. For us in the Midwest that means mosquitoes, wasps and bees are always bugging us this time of year. Dr. Kara Bruning at the Main McGreevy Clinic Avera in Sioux Falls has some helpful tips on preventing and treating bites.

Dr. Bruning says, "The best thing to do to protect your kids from getting bug bites is to put bug spray on them. It's important to never apply bug spray to kids younger than 2 months of age."

Dr. Bruning says if your children are sensitive to that spray you can spray their clothes instead, let them dry and then dress the kids. You may want to stay indoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active and wear long sleeves and pants. Never spray the kids faces directly either. Spray your hands instead and apply that way.

Dr. Bruning says, "You don't want to buy products with Deet that have sunscreen because the Deet makes the sunscreen less effective."

Wasps don't have a stinger so you can treat them the same way you treat other bug bites. Use hydro-cortisone, Benedryl or Claritin for the itch.

Dr. Bruning says, "The important thing with any bug bites if your child develops any difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips and throat, are faint or dizzy or you are concerned call a doctor or get them to the ER right away."

For bee stings Dr. Bruning says you need to get the stinger out, but don't try squeeze it out because that only releases more venom to the area. Instead scrape a flat edge over it (you can use a credit card) and then gently pull out the stinger. Use an ice pack and take some Tylenol or Motrin and then watch for swelling.
