It's a busy time of year for college aged kids. 17 million students are packing up and getting ready to leave home and head to school. Here's 5 big health risks college students face and what you parents can do to help them avoid problems.

Know Your Medical History:
Put together a health index card; include any existing medical conditions, a list of medications with doses and directions for taking them and include enough refills, family health information, dates of most recent immunizations, allergies and finally make sure your emergency contact info is on this card so someone can call your cell if your child has a problem.

Get Emergency College Contacts:
Know who your child's resident adviser is, how to contact the campus police and number of local E.R. It's also a good idea exchange numbers with a trusted friend or their roommate.

Talk About Alcohol Dangers:
Make sure they understand the risks of using Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen. Aspirin doesn't mix with alcohol.

Watch for Stress-Related Problems:
College lifestyle can lead to stress, depression, sleep issues and eating problems. Alert them they are more vulnerable now.

Finally, Talk To Your Children About Sex.
Have a frank discussion about your values and about sex in general. Go over your concerns including birth control to infections. Syphilis has been on the rise in this country for 7 straight years. Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are also making a come back at record high levels. We don't want your children to get what's going around.
