Preventing Summertime Injuries

By Nancy Naeve Brown

Pediatricians want to keep your kids out of the E.R. and their offices this summer by offering some helpful advice to you parents. We take a look at a few things your kids should wear besides a good pair of running shoes, as they tear around the neighborhood this summer.

Pediatrician Dr. Kara Bruning at the main McGreevy Clinic Avera says it really boils down to making sure your kids are wearing the basics as they head outdoors: bug spray, sunscreen and a helmet. Dr. Bruning says, "As kids get out of school we worry about bug bites and those can get infected. You need to make sure they put on the insect repellent. Sunscreen. We see a surge in skin cancer rates. It's going up so please put sunscreen on your children as they are going outside."

Pools can look inviting to all of us on a hot day, but dr. Bruning says pools with no fences can mean the death of a little one who is in a hurry to jump in if someone isn't always watching. She says, "We see a lot of broken bones and things like that. Kids running on the playground falling down. There's not a lot you can do to prevent that and I know we will see a lot more of that throughout the summer."

Broken bones and scrapes can be mended and fixed, but if your child is going all out in the middle of traffic on their bike without a helmet, taking a spill could lead to serious injuries. So make sure they protect their melon with a well fitted helmet.
