Week Of Sept.14, 2009 Bug Bites in SF

By Nancy Naeve Brown

In this week's What's Going Around Segment we talked with a Sioux Falls Pediatrician who says the bugs are still bugging a lot of her patients.

I don't know about you, but when I was playing with the dogs in the lawn a couple of weeks ago, something in the grass got a hold of three of my toes and I was up for three nights scratching at them. It was miserable. If grown-ups can't take it, think about the little kids getting chomped on.   Pediatrician Dr. Shari Eich at the main McGreevy Clinic Avera in Sioux Falls says she's been treating a lot of them.

Dr. Eich says, "Yeah, I've been seeing a lot of bug bites coming in to the office. The kids come in with red swollen areas which are mostly on the face. We can't always tell if it's a bug bite or an infection, so it's a good idea to get it checked out."

Since kids don't seem to have the will power to not scratch what itches, a lot of times Dr. Eich will see a bug bite that's become an open wound which often times becomes an infected sore. She says it's best to cover the bite up with a band-aid before it gets the best of them.

Dr. Eich says, "If they scratch the bug bite open, they will need an antibiotic or you can use hydrocortisone or Benedryl to try and help prevent the itching in the first place."

If none of the over-the-counter anti-itch creams even come close to helping, it's a good idea to take them to the doctor because they have stronger prescription ointments there.

And that what's going around this week.
