What's Going Around: The Parent Checklist

By Nancy Naeve Brown

As the number of H1N1 flu cases rise, it seems so is the level of anxiety among parents. The ABC news medical team has put together "The Parent Checklist" to keep your kids safe and healthy.

Here are 5 fast and easy things you can do to prevent the spread of H1N1:

Number 1:

Don't send you children to school when they're sick. They can't focus, they can't function, plus, you don't want other parents to send their sick kids.

Number 2:

Make sure your children have had all their immunizations and get the flu shot.

Number 3:

Teach your children about hand washing or let them teach you. They work on that stuff in school.  It's easy!  Wet your hands and lather for 20 seconds then rinse. It works to recite the ABC song in your head (that's the appropriate amount of time). It's also a good idea to give them a little bottle of hand sanitizer to throw in their backpack that they could use before snack time if they can't get to a sink.

Number 4:

Teach your children to cover their coughs and sneezes. Make sure everyone in the family coughs/sneezes in the crook of their arms, not in your hands. It seems silly, but it works.

Number 5:

Start the day with a healthy breakfast. This will give your children the energy they need to focus in school and the healthy bodies to stay well.

And that's “The Parent Checklist”: Tips to Prevent the Spread of H1N1
