What's Going Around: Hives

Hives

By Nancy Naeve Brown

Viruses are pretty common this time of year, but as KSFY learned, there was one going around amongst some Sioux Falls area youngsters that caused more itching than sickness.

Pediatrician Dr. Kara Bruning at the main McGreevy Clinic Avera says they are starting to see an influx of patients with H1N1, but prior to the flu virus, she says another one was making the rounds and kids were breaking out in hives from it.

Dr. Kara Bruning says, "Yeah, I've actually been seeing several kids with hives lately. Hives are a red itchy rash with raised spots scattered all over their body. Kids have been complaining that it itches like crazy. If they start complaining that they are having trouble breathing, that's a problem and that's when we need to see them right away."

Usually when you think of hives you think of a severe allergic reaction to something, but Dr. Bruning says because so many kids were coming in with them it more than likely stemmed from a virus.

D. Bruning says, "Just so you know, if the kids are playing really hard and get really hot or they’ve been in a hot shower or bath the hives are  going to look worse. As long as they aren't having trouble breathing it's okay to watch them and treat them at home."

As for treating the symptoms, Dr. Bruning says Benadryl cream or oral pills can help, but if the over-the-counter stuff doesn't stop the itching it's good to see your doctor. They can prescribe something a little stronger.

It seems like there is getting to be more and more things going around, that there doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason for.
