The Moment: When Art Meets News

The Visual Arts Center, in partnership with Argus Leader Media, presents this feature exhibition exploring the art of photojournalism. Featured photographers Joe Ahlquist, Elisha Page, Jay Pickthorn and Emily Spartz Weerheim convey the stories of our community through photography. Experience photos of everyday life in Sioux Falls, as well as photos of pivotal moments in the news alongside commentary from the photographers who captured these funny, tragic, beautiful and emotional images.

"It's new territory for us. We've partnered with Argus Leader Media to show photojournalism as fine art," Visual Arts Center Director Kara Dirkson said.

"These are the folks who are either sent to be in the right place at the right time or coincidentally happen to be in the right place at the right time as you see in some of these photos," Dirkson said.

As the story changes, so do the images which makes the exhibition in the galleries so unique.

"The opportunity to partner with another entity that's downtown. Something that's visual -- print or video media. It's exciting. Art can encompass so many different forms these days. The exciting thing, I think, was not only the community tie that these images have but it's a very different way of looking at artwork," Dirkson said.

A reception for this exhibition will be held March 4th in the Visual Arts Center. The exhibition is available through May 22nd.
