CASTLEWOOD - A family of five was able to make it out safely after a fire broke out in the garage attached to their house, though two family pets were lost in the fire.

According to the Hamlin County Sheriff's Office, the fire broke out early Tuesday morning at a residence on the 400 block of Market Street East. The fire started in the garage, though smoke had filtered into the rest of the house.

Emergency responders from the Castlewood Fire Department, Castlewood Ambulance, and Hamlin County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the home. They were able to stop the fire from spreading to the main part of the home. It was out in about an hour.

All five members of the family along with one pet made it out of the home safely. Two family pets were killed in the fire.

Investigators say the garage received extensive damage, while the rest of the house received smoke damage.

The cause is still under investigation. The family is currently staying with relatives.
