Breakfast Celebrates Oprah's Big Give Dakota

By Leslie Rupiper

Oprah's Big Give Dakota is in its final hours. Today, many of those involved with the project gathered for an emotional breakfast to look back on what's been accomplished in just a few week's time.

Argus Leader Publisher Arnold Garson said, "We're here this morning to celebrate the extraordinary success of all four of these groups." Four groups, each given $2,500 by KSFY courtesy of "Oprah's Big Give" and ABC. From there, they were asked to "pay it forward".

Avera McKennan came in contact with two young girls: one battling cancer, another recovering from a serious accident.  Both were on a mission. Avera McKennan Director of Media & Public Relations, Kenyon Gleason says, "They have had to overcome incredible things in their lives and now they want to help other kids overcome incredible things in their lives." Each young lady received $3,500.

14 year old Taylor Jepsen of Terril, Iowa is raising money to help other girls at the Spencer & Estherville, Iowa Avera Clinics.  12 year old Lauren Ellwein of Sioux Falls is raising money to help hire a full-time Child Life Specialist at Avera McKennan Children's Hospital.  As a surprise, both girls also got $3,500 for their own needs.

Target teamed up with more than 200 businesses, including Paul Fick Homes to provide a new house for the 9 members of the Konakowitz family. 3 year old Ayden is battling cancer. The effort also resulted in computers, furniture and a new van for Paul & Monica Konakowitz's family.

Target Store Manager, Scott Soucie says, "It wasn't just one particular business that made this happen. It was everybody here in Sioux Falls and I'm so proud to say that I'm a part of this community."

Citibank decided to help Laura B. Anderson Elementary School.  More than $150,000 in improvements for things like playground equipment, computers and school supplies will make a huge difference for the school's culturally diverse students.

Citibank's Jerry Nachtigal says, "You can feel the excitement and the learning that is going on there and the kids are sponges as they pick up information and as they grow and thrive in the school."

And then there's "One Person, Big Difference". Tanya  Sheldon, Ann Meinjohans and Michelle Poe are three Sioux Falls moms who raised $18,000 for the Children's Home Society. They say what they learned through Oprah's Big Give Dakota, should be an example for all of us.

Tanya says, "Giving makes you so happy. It brings so many blessings to you and with that it changes your life and it changes all those around you."

You can see the finale of "Oprah's Big Give" this Sunday night at 7 p.m. on KSFY.
