Sioux Falls Police say theyve made more than 11-hundred DUI arrests so far this year.

One of the dangers of Halloween are people who party then drink and drive.

Tonight, Action News was granted exclusive access as Sioux Falls Police work to get drunk drivers off the road.

The Halloween DUI patrol began before the sun had even set.

Officer Greg Slaven is one of the most experienced officers in the department's traffic division. "I'm not sure why we're seeing more other than the part that Sioux Falls is growing."

Already this year, total d-u-i arrests for the department have eclipsed the 11-hundred mark.

A huge point of concern for Sergeant Galen Smidt, who oversees police DUI patrols..his concern is heightened tonight because Halloween lands on a Friday. "Friday night are typically busiest for us anyway so the fact that it lands on a Friday gives some people a reason to drink more."

Back in the squad car with Officer Slaven: his eyes scan every car that passes by, looking for any hint of a drunk or drugged driver. He's also worried about the people who get blitzed tonight then drive tomorrow: many still legally drunk. "People do it all the time and I'm gotten a lot of DUI's just because of that fact."

And it's not just tonight:

Sioux Falls Police will patrol through the weekend to get those who are under the influence off the streets and in jail.
