WAKE UP WITH KSFY: Sisseton-Frontier Past Meets Development Future

Completed Million Dollar Storm Sewer Project

By Valerie Gutierrez

KSFY Live In The Morning anchors Chris Studer and Valerie Gutierrez talk with city leaders throughout South Dakota about their towns, what's happening there and what's new.

They talked to Mayor Frank Karts from the city of Sisseton. The city has a population of about 2,500. It's in the northeast part of the state, in Roberts County.

The city, named for the Sisseton division of the Dakota Sioux, is located north of the tribal seat of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe at Old Agency, South Dakota. Sisseton is also home to notable Native Americans like Gabriel Renville, the last chief of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe. Joe Robbie, original owner of the Miami Dolphins, also originally hailed from Sisseton.

Roberts County also has great walleye and perch fishing in Cottonwood and Whitestone lakes. In addition, Roberts County is located in the state's prime pheasant-hunting range. Hunters here also will find whitetail deer attracted to crops like corn, oats, wheat and soybeans.

Mayor Karts talked about Dakota Wind L.L.C. plans to create the largest community-based wind-energy operation in the country. When the project is completed, you'll see about 500 turbine windmills at various project sites including Roberts County. This could generate a lot of income for those who choose to invest in the project. .

Mayor Karts said there's a lot of great things going on in the area. He discussed the 1.15 million dollar storm sewer project that was completed last fall. Now the city is preparing for construction on a fine arts center. They are also expanding Woodland Cabinets and the Sisseton Livestock Auction. Last April, city leaders and residents outlined some goals for the city in the South Dakota Rural Development Council "Assesment Program". This April the city will participate in the design South Dakota Program in conjuction with the Rural development and American Institute of Architects.
