Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD

KSFY Live In The Morning anchors Chris Studer and Valerie Gutierrez talk with city leaders throughout South Dakota about their towns, what's happening there and what's new.

They talked to Mayor Lou Sebert from the city of Mitchell. The city has a population of about 15,000. It's in the southeast part of the state, in Davison County.

Mayor Sebert talked about the famous Corn Palace. The 1921 building still stands but many say the Corn Palace and its 3,200 seats are too small to host state high school athletic championships and other events.

Some residents wanted to complement the Corn Palace with a $25 million, 7,000-seat "events center" along the state Highway 37 bypass. But then voters rejected a request to raise taxes in support of the plan. It was rejected by 69 percent of voters in September.

However, Mayor Sebert said the idea of a smaller events center could be a possibility.

The Mayor also talked about the city's business climate. Although business was down a bit last year, he said this year it seem to be on an uprise and looks like it should stay there.

Mayor Sebert is also excited about adding 10 new soccer fields to the city.
