Police Investigate Attempted Murder

By Chris Studer

Sioux Falls Police are investigating an attempted murder in the John Morrell parking lot overnight. That's after a man allegedly ran down two people in a car, and assaulted them with a steel pipe.

Authorities say it happened at around 1:40 a.m. Thursday in the east parking lot of John Morrell meatpacking plant.

A 40 year-old man is hospitalized at this hour with what authorities are calling life threatening injuries. His name wasn't released. He was apparently intentionally hit by a car. The suspect is 26 year-old Mohamed A. Abuzingla of Sioux Falls. Police say he's the man responsible for these crimes.

He was arrested for one count of attempted murder and one count of aggravated assault. Police say the suspect overheard a conversation the two victims were having. Authorities say something in that conversation aggravated Abuzingla.

When the two victims left for work, they later told police they heard a car revving it's engine. Authorities say Abuzingla intentionally ran into one victim with a vehicle, but the other avoided the car. Police say as soon as Abuzingla hit the victim he got out of the car and starting beating the man with a steel pipe.

Officer Loren McManus with the Sioux Falls Police Department says, "I don't know for sure where it came from, but he produced a metal pipe if you will, and struck the victim several times with that metal pipe."

Those injuries sent the 40 year-old Sioux Falls man to the hospital. His name wasn't released. Police say that he was in surgery for those injuries Thursday morning.

Abuzingla is in custody and could appear in court Thursday afternoon.
