Trooper Shoots and Kills Man After Chase

By Caitlin Haedicke

26-year-old Anthony Larocco led authorities on a chase through Hughes and Sully counties. The Pierre Dispatch Office received a call just before 8 P.M. stating that the 26-year-old man was suicidal and homicidal.

Attorney General Larry Long says the call may have come from Larocco himself, a man known by police to have a history of mental illness and suicide attempts.

"During the course of the 911 call, I think Mr. Larocco himself placed the call and there was some discussion of hostages and possible harm to the hostages," said South Dakota Attorney General Larry Long.

After the call, seven different law enforcement agencies responded to Harrold and tried to pull over Larocco's vehicle. But instead of stopping, he led authorities on a chase down rural roads north of town, flashing a weapon out the window several times during the pursuit.

Larocco eventually drove into a field in Sully County, got stuck, then took off on foot. The trooper reportedly shot Larocco while attempting to take him into custody. He was transported to a Pierre Hospital, but later died.

Because the shooting involves a trooper of the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the Attorney General's office is now handling the investigation.

"Our job is to, a, determine what happened; b, whether the shooting was in accordance with state law; and c, whether it was in accordance with the agency shooting policy," stated Long.

Officials later found the weapon Larocco was flashing was actually a pellet gun, which looked like a real handgun.

The name of the trooper involved has not been released.
