Authorities in south central South Dakota say they have called off a three county search for Platte Mayor Ken Lucas, who has been missing since Friday.
At this time they won't say what has led them to this conclusion.
The last time Lucas was seen, was just after noon on Friday, when he was driving west over the Platte-Winner bridge.
According to a note he left his wife, he was on his way to Burke to meet with a client for his insurance business.
After not returning home that night, an extensive search was put into place. authorities in three south central south dakota counties continued their search for the 59 year old mayor for most of the day Sunday.
Over a hundred volunteers, including police and fire departments from 4 counties, came together for the second day to search for Ken Lucas. It was a time consuming search, covering a very large portion of South Dakota.
Road after road, volunteers searched for any sign of Platte Mayor Ken Lucas.
"Mostly we look for tracks going off the road or the fence being down. Just anything out of the ordinary that might signal an accident or something like that," said search volunteer Ken Lieuwen.
On their second day, they widened the search to the east of Charles Mix County after no sign of lucas in Gregory or Douglas County.
"We've tried to cover everything we can. Gregory county was flown yesterday by a private pilot and then highway patrol flew it later. So we've covered everything we can," said Platte Police Chief Steve Christensen.
The snow made the search easier. They could see tracks and didn't have to walk the fields. But a lack of information made knowing where to search difficult.
"There's just no leads. We don't really know where he was going. We have no idea if we're in he right county or anything. We're just looking, kind of grasping at straws," said Lieuwen.
Making every tip, every track, and every phone call that much more important.
On top of police and fire fighters, many of the volunteers were local platte residents. Many local businesses also donated food and coffee to keep the volunteers warm.
KSFY will have more on why authorities cancelled the search tonight on KSFY live at 10:00.
