Britney Spears has lost all custody of her two young sons after a three-hour standoff with her ex-husband, Kevin Federline. Authorities say she refused to give the boys back to Federline after a supervised visit. The incident ended with Spears going to the hospital in an ambulance, though she was not injured.
Britney's custody fight might be an extreme, but it brings to light a very common issue among separated parents. We took a look at services available to moms and dads who want to handle joint custody the right way, even if they don't get along. Richard Engels is a Sioux Falls attorney who handles many child custody cases. He says, "I don't think as a lawyer you could find a worse client than Britney Spears, it seems like she's doing everything wrong.. Engels says the Spears case isn't typical around here, but he does believe people are taking notice. Engels says, "I think the worse Britney's behavior is, the more people realize they shouldn't emulate her."
But bitter custody cases are a reality in this area. The Family Visitation Center in Sioux Falls allows parents and kids to meet up without the threat of confrontation. It also provides a safe spot for supervised visits by those who don't have custody of their children. Melissa Dreesman has been through custody issues herself. She has some advice for Britney Spears. She says, "Set everybody a good example and show them that if you're going to be in it for your kids, be in it for your kids and throw everything else aside."
All parents who get divorced in the 2nd Judicial Court of South Dakota must attend a short session on how to make the split easier on the children. If you'd like more information on the Family Visitation Center, visit their website.
