Vaccine Bill Proposed

By Caitlin Haedicke

For years, researchers have been studying a possible link between vaccines that contain a mercury based preservative and mental disorders such as autism. Some recent studies have refuted that claim, but some say there still isn't clear evidence in either direction.

While the medical community continues to study the issue, eight states have already taken action. Iowa, Delaware, Hawaii, California, New York, Illinois, Missouri and Washington have either banned or reduced the amount of mercury in childhood vaccinations. Here in South Dakota, vaccines with almost five times the FDA's recommended limit are still being used. One South Dakota law maker is trying to change that.

Currently in South Dakota, flu shots are free. But representative Dan Ahlers says with the amount of mercury they hold, they could come with a cost you don't know about.

While research is still unclear about mercury preservatives in vaccines, it's clear mercury itself can cause serious problems.  That's why one lawmaker doesn't want to take any chances.

"You can get cerebal paulsi, mental retardation, seizures, and it can cause deafness. I mean there's a whole host of very serious disorders," said Representative Dan Ahlers.

Representative Dan Ahlers has introduced a bill that if passed, would bring the mercury levels in vaccinations for children and pregnant women down to the FDA recommended level.

The FDA recommendation for mercury in vaccinations is .5 micrograms per.5 milliliter dose. Alhers says the state's influenza vaccination is five times that.

"Every group says more studies need to be done. So if we're in doubt about the effects of mercury in these vaccinations, then we need to keep it out," stated Ahlers.

Despite his conviction, Ahlers believes the bill wont the pass in the legislature because of the cost. Mercury reduced shots would cost $3.10 more a piece.

For some parents, a vaccine with less mercury is worth the extra money, and even worth driving to another state. Julie Baumberger, a mother of three, is one of those parents. She says she wouldn't think twice about driving to Iowa, where they openly offer reduced mercury vaccinations.

"I'd rather spend the extra gas money, spend whatever it's going to cost to see a doctor down there and give them the shot that's mercury reduced then knowingly put it in their system," said Julie Baumberger, a mother of three.

Alhers says because of the high mercury content in vaccinations, some parents are choosing not to get their kid's vaccination until they reach Kindergarten. That leaves the potential for serious diseases to be spread in daycare.

We have a son who was developing normaly and we gave him an mmr chicken pox vaccine and a flu shot. I am not sure why we did this but gave him another flu shot 2 days later. After that last flu shot we lost our son. He had very bad stools lost eye contact lost words. He was then diagnosed with Autism our peditrician could not believe what had happened and now he says he has second thoughts for vacinnating his children. He says not enough testing was done on multiple vaccinations at one time

I am appauled that the medical community still accepts flu shots and other vaccinations with mercury a very highly toxic substance that damages the nervous system. No wonder people do not want to get a flu shot.

I know of a family whos son got autism after immunizations. Our kids used to play together, after the immunization he completly lost eye contact, had severe bowl problems, tantrims, did not speak anymore, did not play anymore, would jump up and down looking at the ceiling. This to me is unbelievable and my kids will never ever get immunizations or a flu shot ever again it is heart wrenching to see a normal kid become disabled because of immunizations.

It is sickening this bill might not pass because of a few dollars of savings. These are children who could possibly be damaged forever. I know several people whos children got autism after receiving the flu shot. I cant wait until there are civil trials on this matter and I am on the jury.

"Science" has determined that mercury is a neuro-toxin and it defies "common sense" to risk the health of pregnent women and babies because its "cheaper" to do so. So, this debate is not between "parents vs science". This is a debate between "science and common sense" The only question remaining is how many pregnant women and babies will be unnecessarily exposed to this neuro-toxin before common sense prevails?

Dan, thanks for protecting our children against neuro toxins. Thimerosal has never been safety tested. There is research dating back to 1948 done by Dr. Frank Engley, former Assistant Dean of the School of Medicine and Chair of Micro biology at the University of Missouri that showed thimerosal was toxic to tissue cells at 5-6 nanomolars. There are 250,000 nanomolars in a flu shot. This is not a small amount of poison!

I would be willing to pay that extra $3.10 for the reduced mercury shots. Can't put a price on our children. Something has to be done to get this passed NOW!

Yes, ethylmercury has shown evidence to be toxic, it's been shown to be immunosupressive. While it clears the blood more rapidly than methylmercury it is readily absorbed by the brain. persists over time. Thimerosal is mutagenetic - it has the ability to mutate genes and is toxic to the nervous system. just read the MSDS on thimerosal. Besides the majority of studies citing no evidence in causation are primarily epidemiological and not toxicological. Look at the kids biochemistry.

I commend Rep Ahlers for his efforts. How was our son exposed to levels of mercury significant enough to poison his organs and tissue causing brain damage if not from thimerosal in his infant immunizations and the flu shot I was mandated to receive during pregnancy? The amount of mercury in the flu shot is NOT insignificant. 49.6% ethyl-mercury by weight. You would need to weigh 550 lbs. as an adult and 275 lbs. as a child for this to be considered safe by the FDA’s own standards.

Congratulations to Dan Ahlers for introducing this bill. People are chosing not to vaccinate their children because of the controversy surrounding mercury in vaccines. If we want to keep our high immunization standards, we have to remove the cause for concern.

We need more information. If the vaccines are not given the diseases they are cause can be deadly. Besides the flu shot what other immunizations are high in mercury? Where is he getting his information? Are there studies proving the link. As a mother of 3 and an RN I need more than just coincidence before I would put my children at risk for a deadly disease.

GO DAN! I can guarantee a TON of people are behind you on this bill-many who would be willing to support you in any way possible. Unfortunately I live w/the nightmare caused by vaccinations-my son was developing on schedule and even ahead in some areas...UNTIL his 15 month shots. He regressed dramatically w/in a few weeks of the shots and now has been diagnosed w/Autism. TOO COINCIDENTAL for me! This bill is a only a start, we need more legislation to help families w/special needs children.

Rep. Ahlers is right to stress the importance of vaccination, but while mercury is a neurotoxin, the thimerosal in flu vaccines (a preservative that contains mercury) is at doses generally considered to be too low to cause damage. There is clearly no evidence for a link between thimerosal and autism; the link between it and other neurological disorders is also suspect.
