Along Elk Point's Main Street, Adrian Hanson is one of many Union County residents who is concerned about Hyperion.

"I didn't like it. I don't think it's; I'm not for it," he said. "Absolutely not for it. What in the world? They're going to put this whole Union County up by trying to put a refinery in here."

At 83 years of age, he's lived in Union County his entire life. He's concerned the oil refinery will replace the farm fields where he lives. Hanson said, "Millions of people are starving in this world and they're going to put this right in the breadbasket of South Dakota farm territory."

A few miles north in Alcester, Union County mom Rachel Hedeen thinks differently. She sees it as an opportunity for new jobs.

What about the possibility of polluting Union County? Hedeen isn't worried about it. She said, "You see the smoke coming out of there everyday. What's the big deal? I mean, the oil refinery is going to do that too."
