Saving Lives In The Snow

By Drew Sandholm

It really came down in Brookings county Thursday night. A snow alert is issued, and no travel is advised. However, that is not an option for EMTs and medics alike.

Wendy Crevier is one of many paramedics at Brookings Health System. There are 2 ambulance crews on staff 24/7, even in this snowstorm system.

Crevier says they go out in any type of weather because emergencies don't wait for the weather.

Brookings Health System averages about 4 to 5 ambulance calls a day. And even in this wicked winter weather they have to respond everyone. But what if the weather gets really bad? Hospital management has it covered.

Dir. Ambulance Services John Kronmiller says they use search and rescue teams. They have snowmobiles and 4-wheelers.

If the sticky stuff causes you to go off the road into the ditch, law enforcement ask that you not only call a friend or a tow truck company, but call authorities to let them know you are ok.
