Protest Continues near Wagner

By Associated Press

A protest at the site of a hog farm that's to be constructed between Wagner and Marty is expected to continue today.  Yankton Sioux tribal members oppose the operation, but no one was arrested yesterday.  There were some arrests on Tuesday.  Before protesters left yesterday, they erected a tipi on reservation land across from the hog farm site.  A lawyer for the Iowa company building the hog farm says it plans to continue construction unless a court with jurisdiction over it orders the work to be stopped.

The lawyer says only state and federal courts have that authority.  A Yankton Sioux tribal judge on Monday ruled that the hog-farm developers could be kept off reservation land.  The hog farm is on private deeded land, with tribal land on the north and private land to the east, south and west.  More than 40 Highway Patrol vehicles watched the protest yesterday, prompting one of the protesters to accuse the state of trying to escalate the conflict.

South Dakota Public Safety Secretary Tom Dravland says the Highway patrol will do whatever needs to be done for the safety of the public.  Governor Rounds cut $2 million from the patrol's budget, and one way the agency plans to cut costs is to reduce overtime. But Dravland says it won't affect the Highway Patrol's presence at the site of an American Indian protest over a hog farm to be built west of Wagner.
