Swine Genetics Company Chooses Campbell County

Pig Improvement Company breaks ground on a new genetic testing facility near Mound City.

By Dawn Crawley

The Pig Improvement Company broke ground Monday as dozens of area residents came to show their support.

The company will genetically test pigs to provide healthier animals that cost less to produce and provide higher quality pork to the consumer.

"We are going to be good neighbors. We appreciate that support. I think it's an excellent marriage of what we need to get done and we appreciate everything you have done for us," said Pig Improvement Company General Manager Bill Christianson.

Community members who gathered after the groundbreaking were excited, but Campbell County Commissioners have heard other opinions.

"The perception of whenever you have a hog you have got odor and perhaps Hispanic workers. I don't see a problem with either one of those," said Campbell County Commission Chairman LeRoy Sandmeier.

The Pig Improvement Company has convinced County Commissioners.

"We went and toured quite a few of their sites and as commissioners and we made the decision. we were satisfied," said Christianson.

And that has resulted in the Pig Improvement Company's first genetic testing facility to be located in the U.S.

The facility is expected to be entirely completed by next April, but the Pig Improvement Company expects to begin some operations by the end of this year.
