Thune Meets with Northwest and Delta Executives About Planned Merger

By Robert Wilson

We're feeling the sting of high prices at the pump and it may also be a tough summer for South Dakota travelers who want to take to the skies. With record fuel prices, one carrier that serves Sioux Falls, Delta says it will have to hike ticket prices by 15 percent just to break even. And members of congress are also wondering if air service to parts of the Rushmore state might be cut back.

Travelers tell us they're wondering about ticket price increases they may have to pay when they book there next flight, and the availability of flights. Especially with the planned merger between Northwest and Delta.

Frequent flyer Jordan Papik says it can already be tough to get the flights he wants into and out of Sioux Falls. "Concerned a little bit about limiting different flights. Like if they don't have the Atlanta connection and the Salt Lake connection any more from Delta. That's a little bit of a concern."

Senator Tim Johnson told KSFY he'd like to see the U.S. Energy Department suspend buying oil for the strategic petrolatum reserves, leaving more supply on the open market. That could reduce the cost of all fuels, jet fuel, gasoline and diesel. Senator John Thune meet Tuesday with the CEO's of Northwest and Delta about the proposed merger. He says his top concerns are price and flight availability. "They gave us all the right assurances, both Delta and Northwest, that service is going to continue to all our communities in South Dakota."

For all the concern, officials at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport tell KSFY the number of flyers is up 11 percent over last year.
