Aberdeen May Allow Up To 8 Pets Per Household

By Dawn Crawley

Pets are a big part of Sophia Lenter's life. Her family decided to build a house in the Rolling Hills subdivision five years ago.

"We brought along eight dogs and a couple of birds, hamsters, just a house full of stuff we brought from Florida," said Lenter.

But that caused a problem. The city of Aberdeen only allows four cats and dogs per household.

"I got two letters from lawyers saying we were over the pet limit and we had to get that ordinance pulled that said we were outside the city limits so we were allowed to keep the pets," said Lenter.

At the time Rolling Hills was just outside the city limits of Aberdeen and Sophia was allowed to keep her pets, but the Mayor says these type of policies may be discouraging to people wanting to move to Aberdeen.

"We are so involved here in getting more people to move to Aberdeen and it's so much of a point of emphasis from us that we saw this as one small impediment to that," said Mayor Mike Levsen.

The Mayor says allowing eight cats or dogs shouldn't be a problem.

"All the other rules and regulations would apply about disturbing the neighbors or barking dogs or letting them loose, so it's not as if it's going to create a neighborhood problem," said Mayor Levsen.

But some say that remains to be seen.

If the proposal passes allowing eight cats and dogs, it would only apply to people moving to Aberdeen. Some people are expressing concern over whether this is fair to people already living in the hub city.

The city council will discuss the proposal Monday night.

Although I do not want anybody to lose their pets, this is just another "small" way the mayor is selling out the people of Aberdeen that already live here with his obsession with growth. Those of us that have lived here for our whole lives should come first.
