A Sioux City football coach is recovering in at Sanford Hospital after Saturday night's Sioux Falls Storm game came to a surprising end. Sioux City Bandits Coach Jarrod DeGeorgia collapsed on the field with only minutes remaining in the game. Original reports were that DeGeorgia had suffered a heart attack. Now his wife confirmed it was a stress attack at the early age of 32. Within minutes, DeGeorgia was on oxygen and in an ambulance, partially thanks to a former opponent and friend.
When Sioux City Bandits Coach Jarrod DeGeorgia collapsed on the field, first responders swung into action. Donnie Hilsenroth, assistant coach of the Sioux Falls Storm, was one of the responders. Not only is he a coach and former athlete, he's a trained Sioux Falls firefighter and EMT.
"Just trying to have a helping hand to help those guys out. Plus as a friend of mine. Jarrod is a great man, a great athlete, and I just wanted to help out the best I could," said Jarrod Donnie Hilsenroth, assistant coach of the Sioux Falls Storm.
Hilsenroth played against DeGeorgia during his time on the Sioux Falls Storm. Back then, it was his job to tackle DeGeorgia and make sure he was down. But this time, everything was different.
"Now, he goes down and yeah, I want to try to save his life," said Hilsenroth.
The Sioux Falls Storm always has a medical staff on standby and depends on them for situations like this.
"It was because of everyone's quick reaction that we were able to take care of him there on the field and make sure it didn't get any worse," said Sioux Falls Storm General Manager Ryan Rickert.
But to have some one on your team so willing to respond is a feeling of relief.
Hilsenroth said, "Every call could be your last, every play could be your last in football, you gotta be ready when something happens like that."
This was DeGeorgia's first year as coach of the Sioux City Bandits. He was a quarterback for the team for eight years before.
