Police Officer's Identity Released

Aberdeen police officer shot in the leg while searching a house for drugs.

By Dawn Crawley

Police have released the identity of an officer shot during a drug raid Wednesday afternoon.

Police say Grant Schnabel was shot in his right leg and is listed in fair condition at Avera St. Luke's in Aberdeen.

We know that an officer took a bullet at 211 9th Avenue Southeast, but neighbors as well as many other people are wondering what actually happened.

Thursday one police car was sitting in front of the house where Officer Schnabel was shot, but Wednesday was a flurry of activity. Yellow tape around the home got the attention of neighbors.

"I parked out front and kind of investigated the scene on my own. Come to find out a cop had gotten shot in the leg which is pretty wild right in my backyard," said Tyler Brown.

But one day later we still don't know where the bullet that hit an officer in the leg came from.

"Since we are not really sure what happened exactly it is really nerve racking and last night I locked my doors for the first time in a couple of months and I was just really nervous," said Amber Eich.

The Division of Criminal Investigation is still collecting evidence and when that is complete the Drug Task Force will again continue their investigation of the house.

Officers that were on the scene at the time of the incident are being interviewed by the Division of Criminal Investigation.

You people are really something! The SRT team is not just the Aberdeen Police Dept. It is made up of law enforcement from the whole county. Some people have nothing better to do I guess.

He got shot by his own partner. I know this for a fact. His partner has now resigned. That is quite some training that our local APD has. Good thing we have a target range for the "Boyz in Black"

It sounds like they arrived and created their own crime scene.
