BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) - A Brookings woman has been ordered to spend 10 years in prison and pay medical costs for abusing an infant in her care.

Twenty-two-year-old Jessica Hornby had pleaded guilty to abuse of or cruelty to a minor. As part of a plea agreement, a second charge of aggravated assault was dismissed.

According to court documents, the 3-month-old boy suffered brain damage and fractured wrists.

Medical bills so far total nearly $52,500.

I knew this girl in school and I never thought she was capibal of something like this. It's truely shocking and it sickens me. She diserves what's coming to her. To me their's no excuse for child abuse... :(

I agree w/ the parents! Why was she running around brookings for an entire year! Hopefully if this ever happens again to another family it is dealt w/ in a more respectful manner...

The 3 month old is my son. His name is Dustin. We need to know why it took 13 to put her in jail. It seemed like she had all the rights in the world, we had nun. WHY! She was free to run free, She harassed us at work. No one would help us. The laws need to change!

This story saddens me to the extreme. I am glad to see justice was finally served. My heart goes out to the family of the child that was victimized. I just can't believe that something like this happened in my home town. And by a girl I knew.
